The history of Roma Queensland is an interesting one... Roma was established in 1867 and is named after Lady Diamantina Bowen (Contessa Diamantina di Roma), wife of the first Governor of Queensland, George Bowen.
The population of Roma is 6848 as of the 2016 census.
Prior to European settlement the history of Roma Queensland is og the Aboriginal peoples of the Mandandanji Nation. Mandandanji (also known as Mandandanyi, Mandandanjdji, Kogai) is an Australian Aboriginal language spoken by the Mandandanji people. The Mandandanji language region is within the local government boundaries of the Maranoa Region.
Roma Queensland was first place in Australia where natural gas was discovered.
The Big Rig Roma has a self-guided outdoor museum and night show that takes you from Australia's first discovery of petroleum, through the boom and bust years of oil and gas exploration and on to today’s multibillion-dollar industry.
Roma has a proud history of beef going back well over 150 years.
In the early days of Roma Queensland cattle rustling was a bit of a problem however in 1873 Captain Starlight was acquitted of cattle rustling and no successful conviction for cattle rustling has been made in Roma Queensland.
The history books show that in 1919 the State Butchers Shop was built and is a heritage-listed butcher shop at 75 Arthur Street, Roma Queensland.
Moving forward in 1969 the
Roma Saleyards were built with timber yards and a capacity for 3,000 head of cattle. These days more than 17,000 head of cattle can be yarded at one time with stock from all over Queensland, and even the Northern Territory, for sale at Roma Saleyards. It is the largest cattle sale yards in the Southern Hemisphere.
In the mid 1990's a group of visionary outback cattle farmers turned their chemical-free properties into being certified organic and OBE Organic Beef was formed.
